My name is Mrs O’Neill and I am the Year 6 teacher. We are very lucky to be supported by Ms. Smith, who also works closely with groups of children.
This year, we have lots of exciting learning planned – you can find out what we will be doing by clicking on the ‘Long Term Plan’ button below.
PE: Y6 will be doing PE on a Tuesday afternoon – please ensure that your child has their PE kit in school each Tuesday.
At Holy Cross, we are incredibly passionate about fostering a love of reading in all children. We also know how difficult it can be to choose reading books for your child, which is why we have created ‘recommended reads’ for each year group. Click on the button below for more information.
Many thanks,
Mrs O’Neill
Reading
In Y6, all children are expected to read for their reading book for at least 20 minutes each day.
We will collect book bags in each Thursday so that we can make sure that books are changed and sent home again, each Friday.
In Y6, children also have access to Read Theory, which is an online reading platform.
Maths
In Y6, all children are expected to complete at least 10 minutes of Timestable Rock Stars each day. It is really important that the children are fluent in all times tables as this will help them with their KS2 SATs.
Spelling
Each Friday, we will send home 10 spellings for your child to practise. The following Friday, there will be a spelling test focusing on the words that have been sent home.
Additional homework will be given as and when I feel it will be beneficial for the children. During the summer term, homework in maths and English is likely to increase to ensure that all Y6 children are prepared for the SATs tests.
As you know, reading is a huge focus in our school and it can have a fantastic impact on children’s learning across the different curriculum areas.
In Y6, reading records should be completed daily by parents/carers.
